Terms of Use — Plateknow

Updated

These are the terms for using the Plateknow app and this website. Using either means you accept them. They are written to be read, and the parts that actually matter to you are the two about estimates and health.

These Terms are an agreement between you and AI Joy Apps — the trading name of an independent studio run by its founder — governing your use of the Plateknow app and this website. The app may be listed on the App Store under the founder’s individual developer name; whichever name it appears under, AI Joy Apps is the studio behind it and your counterparty under these Terms. Our privacy policy is incorporated into them by reference.

Who may use it

You must be at least 13, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country if that is higher. If you are under the age of majority where you live, use Plateknow only with the involvement of a parent or guardian.

What Plateknow is

An iOS app for photographing meals, recording how you felt afterwards, and reading the two back together. It estimates calories and macronutrients from a photograph, and it looks for patterns between what you logged and what you reported.

You need an iPhone running a supported version of iOS. An iCloud account is optional — without one the app keeps everything on the device and does not sync.

Estimates are estimates

The number the app gives you is a guess made from a flat image, and the honest description of it is on our accuracy page. Oil, butter and sauce are invisible in a photograph and calorically enormous. A bowl photographed from above shows its surface, not its depth. A mixed dish has no visible boundaries to separate.

Do not treat a Plateknow figure as a measurement. It is an estimate with real error in it, presented with a range for exactly that reason. Where a decision needs an accurate number — a medical diet, a clinical restriction, a competition weight — weigh the food.

Not medical advice

Plateknow is a general wellness app. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose, treat or prevent anything, and nothing it shows you is medical or dietary advice or a substitute for a qualified professional.

A pattern the app points out — between a food and how you said you felt — is a correlation in your own records. It is not a finding about your body, not a diagnosis of an intolerance or an allergy, and not a reason to remove a food from your diet without talking to someone qualified. The app is written to say this to you in the moment as well as here.

If you have or think you may have an eating disorder, please speak to a professional before using any app that counts what you eat, including this one.

Your data, and who owns it

Your photographs, your notes and your journal are yours. We claim no ownership of them and no licence to use them for anything, including for training models. They stay on your device and in your own iCloud — see the privacy policy for the specifics, including the one thing that is sent when you ask for an estimate.

You are responsible for your own backups. Your journal lives on your device and in your iCloud account. If you delete the app without an iCloud account signed in, or delete your iCloud data, it is gone and we cannot recover it — we do not have a copy.

Subscriptions

Plateknow is free to use, with a daily allowance of AI estimates. The allowance is on the estimate, never on the diary: once it is spent you can still log the meal, type in what it was, and every follow-up check-in still arrives. A subscription raises the estimate allowance and opens the longer recaps.

  • Payment is taken by Apple through your App Store account when you confirm the purchase.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically at the same price and period unless auto-renew is switched off at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
  • Renewal is charged within 24 hours of the end of the current period.
  • You manage and cancel subscriptions in your App Store account settings, not in this app. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
  • If a free trial is offered, any unused part of it is forfeited when you buy a subscription.
  • Prices are shown in your local currency before you confirm, and may differ between countries. We may change prices for future periods, and you will be told before a renewal at a new price.

Refunds are handled by Apple under its own terms, and we cannot issue them. If something has gone wrong, write to hello@plateknow.com anyway — we would rather know, and we will help you make the request.

Features described as premium may change as the app develops. If we remove something you are paying for, we will say so before the change and you can cancel.

How you may use it

Use it for yourself, lawfully. Do not attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile or interfere with the app or the service behind it, do not attempt to bypass the free allowance, and do not use automated means to send requests to the estimate service. It is a small service with a real bill, and abuse takes it away from everyone.

We may suspend access to the estimate service where use is abusive or is putting the service at risk. Your journal is on your device and is unaffected by this.

Availability

The app runs on your device and keeps working offline — logging, check-ins and recaps do not need us. The estimate service is a network service and can be unavailable, and we do not promise it will be up at any particular time. Nothing in the app is lost when it is down; you type the meal in instead.

Intellectual property, and your content

The Plateknow name, the app, this website, and their design, illustration, text and software belong to AI Joy Apps or its licensors. Beyond using the app as it is meant to be used, no rights are granted to you.

Your photographs, notes and journal remain yours, as set out above. If you send us ideas, suggestions or feedback, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual licence to use them to improve the product, with no obligation to you — which is the ordinary arrangement, and it is why we can act on a suggestion without a negotiation first.

Liability

The app and this website are provided as they are. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits or goodwill, or for decisions taken on the basis of an estimate or a pattern the app displayed. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim and USD 50.

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Some places do not allow the limits above, so they may not apply to you.

If you are a consumer, you have rights under the law of your own country that these terms do not affect.

Ending it

You may stop using Plateknow at any time and delete the app — remembering to cancel any subscription first, since deleting an app does not stop Apple billing you. We may suspend or end access where these terms are breached, or where we discontinue the product. Your journal is on your device either way. Sections that by their nature should outlive the agreement — intellectual property, disclaimers, liability — continue to apply.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Taiwan, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and you agree that the Taiwan Pingtung District Court is the court of first instance for any dispute arising out of them. Mandatory consumer-protection rights in your own country of residence are unaffected.

Apple’s terms

For the app downloaded from the Apple App Store: this agreement is between you and AI Joy Apps only, and not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content, and has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it. To the maximum extent permitted by law Apple has no warranty obligation, and any product-liability, legal-compliance or intellectual-property claim regarding the app is our responsibility rather than Apple’s. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.

You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo, and that you are not on any U.S. Government prohibited-parties list.

This website

The explanatory pages describe technology that is changing quickly, and each carries the date it was last checked. Where a page states our engineering judgment rather than a published finding, it says so on the page. Joining the waitlist places you on a list to be told when the app is available — it is not a purchase, it reserves nothing, and it can be cancelled by writing to hello@plateknow.com.

The text, photography and design on this site belong to us. The typeface, Archivo, is used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Changes to these terms

The date at the top is the last change. A change that materially affects what you are paying for, or what you may do with the app, will be notified in the app before it takes effect.
